Google’s Pixel Fold is due for an update and that may happen sometime later this year. However, its successor may not be called the Pixel Fold 2, but rather be marketed as Pixel 9 Pro Fold. A new report sheds light on the foldable phone, revealing that Google may change the position of its next foldable. The device may arrive as a Pixel 9 series device.
According to Android Authority, the upcoming foldable phone from Google might not be called the Pixel Fold 2. It could be named the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, making it the fourth Pixel 9 series phone. Having said that, we might see the foldable released alongside Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro/9 Pro XL, or early, depending on Google’s plans. It is worth noting that Pixel Fold was launched in May last year.
Internally, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is being called “comet”. Following are the codenames of other Pixel 9 phones: Pixel 9 – tokay, Pixel 9 Pro – caiman, Pixel 9 Pro XL – komodo.
A separate leak earlier revealed that the foldable phone may feature an 8.02-inch primary screen. This will be the main display placed on the inside. It will be a flexible OLED panel allowing it to fold. It is also tipped to have a 6.29-inch cover screen.
These screen specs suggest that the Fold 2, or, now being called the Pixel 9 Pro Fold may have a larger footprint. For comparison, the existing Pixel Fold features a 7.6-inch main screen and a 5.8-inch secondary panel.
The device could be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset, which we may also see in the other Pixel phones. If this happens, it will be a major upgrade over the Pixel Fold’s Tensor G2 chipset. Expect it to have up to 16GB of RAM and UFS 4.0 512GB of storage.
Apart from this, there’s no other exact information about the phone’s specs. However, we should learn more soon. It is to be seen when the phone will be launched, whether at the Google I/O in May or during the release of Pixel 9 phones around October.
In other news about Google, the company will most likely unveil the Pixel 8a in May. The smartphone is expected to feature a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, up from the 90Hz screen of the Pixel 7a. It is expected to come with a Tensor G2 chipset and a dual-rear camera system.
