The flagship and premium words in smartphones always resonate with Apple, Samsung, and Google. These companies not only come up with some of the most high-end devices, but also bring powerful smartphones. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is also one of the smartphones positioned as a step forward in the foldable segment, boasting an IP68 rating, redesigned hinge, large battery, and Qi2 wireless charging. However, its much-hyped durability just blew into pieces in one of the tests.
YouTuber JerryRigEverything (JRE) shared the video, where he is testing the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold to his standard tests. Nevertheless, the results are way too alarming to consider the Pixel 10 Pro Fold the safest smartphone.
YouTuber JerryRigEverything (JRE) tested the premium Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and during the bend test, the device not just snapped at one of its antenna lines, but it also experienced a battery explosion. This marked an unprecedented failure in JRE’s decade-long history of phone durability testing.
This is the same issue that was reported in both the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the original Pixel Fold. The break in the antennas pinched the pouch-style battery layers, and hence, leading to a short circuit.
This resulted in a thermal reaction, causing the battery to release all of its energy uncontrollably and igniting the device. To recall, Google advertised its Pixel 10 Pro Fold with a fully sealed IP68 rating, promising dust and water resistance. Nevertheless, JRE’s sand test revealed a different story.
In the JRE test, when sand particles were poured on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, they penetrated the hinge and started producing grinding and crunching sounds. While the display may be dust-resistant, the hinge is clearly not the same. It means claiming the device to have an IP68 rating raises some serious questions. The test showcases that the word dust dust-proof advertisement doesn’t align with the real-world scenarios.
You would be shocked to read that the exploding battery is a first in JRE’s testing history and raises serious safety concerns. The test indicates that Google’s promises of chassis improvements and durability were largely superficial.
Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 survived the JRE’s bend test despite having a thinner chassis as compared to the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. As per JRE, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is ‘by far the weakest folding phone’, highlighting Google’s gap between its claims and practical performances.
