Apple iPhone 17 could be the biggest upgrade in years: New Slim model, ProMotion for all, and more

Apple will launch the iPhone 16 series in less than 2 months. However, the series may not bring major upgrades apart from the chipset and the screen size. Now, a new rumour suggests that next year, i.e. in 2025, we may get to see the biggest overall update for iPhones. The iPhone 17 series may have changes in terms of the design, display, cameras, performance, and even the models in the lineup. Starting from the models in the series, there could be four models in the iPhone 17 lineup – iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Slim. You see that the Plus model is missing from the series. That’s because Apple may do away with the iPhone 17 Plus model with the iPhone 17 Slim, however, the Slim model may be a premium one.

Display and design 

As the name suggests, the major prowess of the Slim model will be its form factor. Akin to the new iPad Pro, the iPhone 17 Slim may be ultra-thin. Also, it may have a larger display size than the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models. It is said to have a 6.55, 6.6, or 6.65-inch screen. It will also have a 120Hz ProMotion screen. That said, it could be a new focus of Apple.

While the Slim moniker is touted, it may not be the final name of the device. We’ll have to wait and see what Apple plans. But we are indeed getting a new model in the series as per the rumours.

Now, all the iPhone models will feature a ProMotion display. So all iPhones will have 120Hz smooth scrolling support. The screen sizes will also change from 6.1 inches on the base and Pro iPhone to 6.3 inches. The iPhone 15 Pro Max will likely get a 6.9-inch.

Apple is also said to use an improved display, moving away from Ceramic Sheild to a hard anti-reflective panel. For the unversed, Apple hasn’t changed its panel since 2020 and it may finally do in 2025.

Other than this, the Pro models may feature a narrow Dynamic Island, while the iPhone 17 and Slim may have the same Dynamic Island as now. As for the material, Apple may go with Aluminium on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim and Titanium on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Camera design, upgrades  

The camera placement is said to change this time with the modules placed in the centre instead of in the upper left-right corner. The camera specifications are unclear as of now. On the front, though, Apple is rumored to use a 24MP selfie snapper, an upgraded camera from 12MP lens.

Performance 

While the iPhone 17 series may not be powered by TSMC’s 2nm chipset, it will still likely get an upraded 3nm SoC. Apple will most likely employ the A19 chipset in the iPhon 17 top models. It’s unclear if Apple will use the same chipset as the Pros on the base iPhone. Despite the 3nm chipset, expect dedicatedf Neural Engine for ML and AI. Apple’s major focus will be on AI, and we saw a glimpse of it at this year’s WWDC.

There’s no information on the battery, but we can expect some improvements. This year the iPhone 16 lineup will have a tad bit bigger batteries. Expect iOS 19 running on the iPhone 17 series.
