Deleting your WhatsApp account

  • Open the WhatsApp app on your Android phone and iPhone.
  • Tap on the three-dots menu on Android and Settings on iPhone in the top right corner.
  • Head over to Settings, then Account, and then Delete My Account.
  • You need to enter your registered mobile number here in a full international format that includes your country code.
  • WhatsApp will ask you the reason for deleting your account, but if you do not want to share it, you can skip the step.
  • Now, tap “Delete my account” to confirm the deletion process.

Your account will be deleted along with your entire data, such as your message history. Deleting your account will also delete you from your WhatsApp groups. If you want your chat data, you must back it up to cloud storage (Google Drive on Android and iCloud on iOS). You cannot reactivate your account with the same phone number later.

Just a break

If you want to check whether alternate platforms such as Telegram are good for you and do not want to leave WhatsApp before coming to a decision, you can take a break. Instead of deleting your account, you can archive your chats. Doing this will hide them from your list but keep them saved on your phone.
