Google and Apple have announced a new tool that will make it easier for users to transfer all of their images and video from Google Photos to iCloud Photos. The announcement is a part of the Data Transfer Project’s Data Transfer Initiative that aims to achieve data portability across platforms, in turn making it easier for users to switch platforms. The development follows the launch of a similar tool to transfer images and videos from iCloud Photos to Google Photos in 2021.
“Beginning today, Apple and Google are expanding on their direct data transfer offerings to allow users of Google Photos to transfer their collections directly to iCloud Photos. This complements and completes the existing transfers that were first made possible from iCloud Photos to Google Photos and fulfills a core Data Transfer Initiative (DTI) principle of reciprocity,” the announcement on the Data Transfer Initiative page said.
Data Transfer Project, in its announcement, said that the two companies will roll out this tool by next week. Apple specifically says that this service will be available to Apple account holders in over 240 countries and regions around the world.
Apple in its support page also said that when photos and videos transferred to iCloud Photos will not be deleted from Google Photos and that users will have to delete the transferred media files manually. Also, the company says that users don’t need to download their photos or videos to transfer them and that the transfer will happen directly from Google to iCloud.
Apple also cautioned that the transfer process might take between “several hours and a few days, depending on the size of the photos and videos being transferred.”
