Gmail is one of the oldest and most popular email services, offering users Google’s suite of services and a seamless integration with the Android ecosystem. According to DemandSage, Gmail has over 1.8 billion active users globally as of 2024, often representing roughly 22.22 percent of the world’s population. Gmail adds hundreds of users daily, thanks to its advanced features, such as AI integration, automation, and robust support of third-party services.
Creating a Gmail account is pretty straightforward. Much like any other email service, Gmail uses a Google account to give access to its services, alongside all others from Google. Here is how to create a Gmail account in a few simple steps:
Open any browser on your computer or smartphone and go to the Google Account sign-up page either by looking it up on Google or entering the URL directly. Click on the “Create Account” button on the webpage.
Google will ask you for a few details when signing up. Enter your first and last name and then choose a unique username. If the username you chose is already taken, Google will tell you the same, asking you to create a different username or choose one from the suggested ones. The username will be the part before “@gmail.com” in your email address.
Although Google now offers password-less sign-ins for its services, you may need to create a password while signing up. Choose a strong password, a combination of letters in uppercase and lowercase, numbers, and special characters. Google will reject your password if it does not meet the minimum criteria of password strength.
Google will also ask you to add a phone number to your account as it helps with account security and recovery if you ever forget your password. Adding a phone number also gives authenticity to your account.
The next step will be to accept Google’s terms of service and privacy policy. These are long documents, so if you do not want to go through each line, you can take the help of an AI service to summarise. It is not advisable to ignore the terms of service and privacy policy of a service you will be using, although that is what most people do. Click “I agree” to finalise the account creation process.
The webpage will automatically redirect you to your Inbox after you have successfully created your Google account.
