Lunar Eclipse In India

Look up stargazers! A total lunar eclipse is set to light up the skies this weekend — starting late on September 7 and peaking in the early hours of September 8. This celestial event will be visible across large parts of Asia, Europe, and Australia — and yes, India is on the list.

So if you’re in India and love watching the night sky, this is one event you’ll want to stay up for.

When To Watch The Lunar Eclipse In India

In India, the best viewing window will be between 11:00 PM on September 7 and 12:22 AM on September 8 (IST). That’s when the moon will enter totality, meaning it will be completely covered by Earth’s shadow and take on a deep reddish hue — what many call a “blood moon.”

As per a report by Space.com, the start of total eclipse is expected at 11:00 PM IST (Sept 7) and end of total eclipse at 12:22 AM IST (Sept 8). The good part is that you won’t need any special gear — just look up, and if the skies are clear, you’re good to go.

Why The Moon Turns Red

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon passes through Earth’s umbra — the darkest part of its shadow. As sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere, it scatters blue light and lets red light pass through, which reflects off the moon’s surface. That’s what gives it that eerie reddish glow.

And there’s more — this eclipse happens just a couple of days before the moon reaches perigee, its closest point to Earth. So, the moon will appear slightly larger and brighter than usual. Think of it as a mini “super blood moon.”

Lunar Eclipse: Watching Tips

No glasses or filters needed. It’s safe to view with the naked eye.

Use binoculars or a small telescope if you want to catch more details, but they’re not essential.

For the best experience, find a spot with minimal light pollution.

In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, or Bangalore, head to rooftops or open spaces.
