Microsoft has unveiled new variants of its top-end Xbox Series X console. During the Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox president Sara Bond revealed a new white Xbox Series X with no disc drive and a black version with a 2TB storage capacity. Otherwise, the disc-less Xbox Series X has no other hardware changes, meaning it will run games similarly to the disc version. A higher storage model will help players store more games without needing an external card.
The “robot white” Xbox Series X without a disc drive will be available later this year for $449.99 in the US. The black version called the “Galaxy Black” special edition Xbox Series will also arrive later this year for $599.99. It will have a disc drive, though. Microsoft will also introduce a 1TB Xbox Series S in white colour around the same time as the other models for $349.99. The specific release timelines are unclear and Microsoft also has not said anything about when these consoles will reach markets outside the US. The Carbon Black Series S with 1TB will continue to be available “while supplies last.”
Apart from changes in their appearances and higher storage capacities, these consoles are mostly identical to their original counterparts. However, the previous leaks suggested Microsoft has made some changes to the heatsink in the Xbox Series X for better cooling. While the company did not mention this upgrade during the event, a teardown of the console should confirm this change.
“This new special edition Xbox Series X delivers the same speed, performance and features of Xbox Series X, but with twice the storage and a unique design,” said Roanne Sones, Head of Xbox Devices.
Microsoft has been long-rumoured to be working on the next-generation Xbox Series X console. During the FTC trial last year, several documents hinted at a refreshed version in development. However, the launch of a new white colour variant with no disc drive could mean Microsoft has either cancelled the revamped Xbox Series X or postponed its launch. The refreshed Xbox Series X console would come with a cylindrical design instead of the current cuboid-like shape and skip the disc drive.
