Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch Productions’ highly anticipated follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, has turned out to be a major hit for Sony. The action-adventure exclusive for the PlayStation 5 has reportedly sold through over 1.6 million copies within its first week, making it Sony’s strongest PS5 first-party launch since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in 2023. According to market research firm Alinea Analytics, which shared the figures in a recent newsletter, Ghost of Yotei has already become one of the most successful first-party launches of the PS5 generation. If units sold to retailers are counted, total sales have reportedly crossed two million copies worldwide. The report suggests that Yotei’s commercial performance is already impressive enough to have recovered its estimated $60 million development cost just one day after release. With its $70 (Rs 4,999 for India) price tag, the game is believed to have generated nearly $100 million in revenue so far – a remarkable feat for a new title that launched on a single platform. While the numbers don’t quite match Ghost of Tsushima’s record-breaking debut of 2.4 million copies in three days, it’s still a strong performance, especially given the PS5’s smaller install base compared to the PS4 era.
Interestingly, Ghost of Yotei is also selling faster than Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, released earlier this year. The report notes that Yotei is selling 1.5 times faster than the latest Assassin’s Creed entry, with digital copies accounting for 77% of total sales so far.
Alinea Analytics also found that nearly all Ghost of Yotei players – about 93% – had previously played Ghost of Tsushima. This shows how well Sucker Punch has managed to carry forward its loyal fan base from the previous game, building on that connection rather than starting fresh.
The game’s early success highlights Sony’s continued dominance in the big-budget single-player space and Sucker Punch’s strength in crafting cinematic, story-driven adventures. Ghost of Yotei has been received warmly by critics, with praise directed at its breathtaking visuals, refined combat, and detailed open world. Some reviewers, however, noted that its story treads familiar ground.
Ghost of Yotei is out now, available exclusively on PlayStation 5, following its global release on October 2, 2025.
