Foldable smartphones have always been my favorite for years and the excitement around the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 feels different. The upcoming smartphone is rumored to launch on July 9 with power-packed features, however, I think this next-generation foldable isn’t just about flashy design, but also meaningful upgrades that the company is expected to reveal.
From enhanced durability and smarter multitasking to top-tier performance, everything points to a device that’s been fine-tuned to near perfection. If the buzz is anything to go by, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 might just be the foldable I and many others have been waiting for.
One of the top reasons for me that could push me to buy the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 is that the company could bring it as a thinner and lighter version of the foldables that Samsung failed to bring in its predecessors. We could see how Samsung is coming from the chunky, fragile first-generation fold to the more confident and durable recent models, and hence, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 could mark a turning point, where the idea of a foldable device shifts from niche curiosity to everyday standard.
If Samsung achieves something that feels as sleek in the hand as a regular flagship phone, that too when unfolding into a stunning multitasking screen, the this is the kind of upgrade I would choose to buy immediately. That’s a reinvention. And for the first time, I’m thinking this might be the foldable I’d actually want to carry every day.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to be between 3.9 and 4.5 mm thick when unfolded and may be around 9 mm thick when folded. To recall, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 5.6mm when unfolded, and 12.1mm when folded.
Additionally, it is also rumored to be weighing 215 grams, which is lighter than its predecessor-Galaxy Z Fold 6, measuring 239g.
One of the few areas where Samsung’s foldables have felt slightly behind their slab-shaped siblings is the camera department. With the Galaxy Z Fold 6, we saw a respectable but safe camera setup: a 50MP primary sensor, 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto. Add to that a modest 10MP selfie on the cover and the still-underwhelming 4MP under-display camera on the inside, and you got a setup that worked fine, but never quite impressed at flagship level.
Now, with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 on the horizon, it seems Samsung is ready to stop treating its foldables like experimental hardware and start giving them the same kind of premium attention it gives to the Galaxy S series. If rumors of a jump to a 200MP primary sensor are true, potentially the same one tipped for the Galaxy S25 Edge and Ultra then it would be a massive leap. Not just in resolution, but in how seriously Samsung takes photography on foldables.
A sensor of that caliber, combined with Samsung’s robust image processing and AI smarts, could be a game-changer for creators and mobile photographers. The idea that you can carry a phone-tablet hybrid that also rivals a professional camera in detail and clarity is powerful. It speaks directly to the Unpacked teaser promising “new ways to connect and create.” A 200MP sensor would enable better low-light performance, more dynamic range, and lossless cropping which is a key tools for content creators, vloggers, and even casual users who just want stunning photos without carrying a second device.
And it’s not just about hardware. Samsung specifically mentioned “seamless AI integration optimized for the foldable format.” That tells me we’re going to see some real intelligence baked into the camera experience, possibly generative edits, live subject tracking for unfolded videography, and smarter multi-angle capture using both screens. AI isn’t just buzz these days and it could help foldables overcome physical camera limitations by using software to make your shots look more intentional, more cinematic, and more polished.
In my view, this is exactly the direction Samsung needs to take. The Z Fold series has always been about ambition, but the camera system lagged behind because it felt like a compromise for space and form factor. If the Z Fold 7 really does bring that 200MP sensor and enhances the rest of the setup, a better under-display camera or improved zoom, then this could be the first foldable that doesn’t ask you to choose between innovative design and top-tier imaging.
Personally, I’ve always admired what Samsung does with cameras on the Ultra line. If they can pack even a portion of that magic into the Z Fold 7 without bulking it up, they’ll be sending a clear message: foldables are no longer just futuristic and they are fully featured, fully capable flagships. And that, to me, is when the foldable truly arrives.
