The next-generation AI startup Perplexity, which has gained some popularity with their answer-based search program, has taken a bold move in its battle against Google with its very first AI-powered web browser creatively named Comet. This is part of a massive expansion that the company has put in place to reshape the manner people engage and access the internet.
To start with, Comet will only reach a small number of customers, who are subscribing to the monthly Max plan offered by Perplexity, as well as some customers on a wait list. The distinction between Comet and other search engines is that it consists of inbuilt AI search engine that provides summarized answers rather than the result that is usually found in search engines. This design is AI-first aimed at ensuring that the core technology of Perplexity is in the center of the browsing experience.
One of the important features to note about the new browser is the Comet Assistant, an in-built AI assistant to aid the user to perform daily digital activities. It is capable of reading and summarizing emails, interpreting calendar items, handling browser tabs and even addressing questions about web pages as a user reads them. The assistant can be turned on through a side panel and provides real-time communication depending on the content accessed.
CEO Aravind Srinivas has positioned Comet as more than just a browser and he wants it to be an “operating system with which you can do almost everything.” He believes if Comet becomes users’ go-to browser, it could lead to “infinite retention,” driving more usage and requests within the Perplexity ecosystem.
With its own browser, Perplexity will no longer need to use other browsers, such as Google Chrome, to access users. It is done amidst the trend of AI integration transforming web browsers, with OpenAI and The Browser Company entering the field as well.
Although getting into a market with Chrome and Safari, Comet can still pick up as long as the exploding Perplexity user base adopts it. Also with 780 million queries last May 2025, and the growth observed on a monthly basis, the startup is picking up. However, it may be even more difficult to encourage the users to leave their browsers and switch into new ones.
