Whatsapp, is testing a new feature for its Android app that allows users to mute everyone mentions in group chats. The update will give more control to participants over notifications and reduce unnecessary distractions from frequent mentions. The instant messaging platform is making it easier for users to manage notifications in large groups without missing important messages.
Wabetainfo, a website responsible for tracking upcoming and new WhatsApp features, reported that the Meta-owned platform is testing a new feature called Mute @everyone. The feature was spotted in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1.
It appears under the notifications settings, alongside the standard mute options for group chats. As soon as the user turns on, it suppresses notifications triggered, particularly by @everyone mentions. This will prevent users from being alerted every time someone tags the entire group.
This feature works in conjunction with the existing mention everyone functionality, which allows any group participant, and not just admins, to alert everyone in the chat. Nevertheless, the mention of everyone’s feature helps in important announcements, but it can also be misused. Many a times it causes disruption in busy group chats.
Once released, users will be able to mute @everyone notifications without stopping to receive other messages from the group. In addition, it will also ensure that you are not missing the critical updates while reducing the clutter by mass mentions.
Users will have the flexibility to toggle this feature on or off manually, giving them complete control over their group chat experience.
Currently, the mute everyone mentions feature is under development and not yet available to beta testers in the Google Play Beta program. Reports suggest that WhatsApp may roll it out in the coming weeks through a future app update.
