WhatsApp keeps working on new updates to enhance the user experience on its platform. With the new and latest beta update for Android version 2.25.33.2, the meta-owned platform hints at bringing new features that enhance privacy and convenience for users. This upcoming functionality will allow users to make voice and video calls without using numbers. It means they can make the calls by using unique usernames, making the usability more private and flexible.

WhatsApp’s New Feature of Connecting via Usernames and Not Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is all set to introduce a new feature on the platform, allowing users to make calls by using unique usernames. It will hence remove the need to share or know someone’s phone number. This will give more control to users in terms of their privacy. As soon as the feature is implemented, you will be able to locate contacts through a search bar in the Calls tab. It means you will only have to enter the username and then initiate calls seamlessly.

Additionally, the system will only display limited public information, including the profile picture. With this new update, WhatsApp is ensuring transparency while protecting personal data.

How Username-Based Calls Work

Once the username-based calls feature rolls rollout, you can follow this simple step-by-step guide

STEP 1: The first step will allow you to enter a name, phone number, or username in the search bar.

Step 2: Now, WhatsApp will match it with the account.

Step 3: If a match is found, the call can be initiated directly from the search results.

Step 4: The feature will work even if the contact is not saved in your list or address book.

Step 5: This makes it easier for users to connect with new acquaintances, clients, businesses, or collaborations, that too without exposing phone numbers.

Privacy and End-to-End Encryption

The feature will be end-to-end encrypted and ensure that only the caller and recipient can access the conversation. In addition, the app is also testing an optional username key. This username key will act as a private access code, allowing calls to be received from trusted users. Additionally, the calls can only be made by people with whom you have shared the passkey.

Release Timeline

The username calling feature is still under development and will be introduced in future updates. The feature will be rolled out for both Android as well as iOS users.
