UMANG App Now Required For Generating And Activating EPFO UAN: Here’s How To Use It

Starting from August 1, 2025, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) says that all Universal Account Number (UAN) allotment and activation will only be possible via the UMANG app and only using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT). This applies to new and existing members of EPF (excluding international workers and Nepalese or Bhutanese citizens). The move is meant to make EPF onboarding faster, safer, and independent of employers.

How to Generate or Activate Your UAN via UMANG

  1. Download the UMANG app as well as the Aadhaar Face RD app.
  2. Open UMANG and go to “UAN Allotment and Activation”.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number, Aadhaar‑linked mobile number, and check the consent box.
  4. Tap “Send OTP”, verify the OTP, and install Face RD app if prompted.
  5. Choose Face Authentication, allow facial scan.
  6. If you don’t already have a UAN, one will be generated and sent via SMS.
  7. If you have an existing UAN not activated, you can activate it the same way. A temporary password is sent once authentication succeeds.
