Indian Railways is making travel more convenient for passengers with a new ticket rescheduling feature. The new feature will allow users to change their travel date of confirmed bookings, that too without any extra charges. The feature is expected to be rolled out in 2026, and hence, will be accessible via IRCTC website and mobile app. The feature is introduced with an aim to offer a simple and more flexible way to manage train travel.
Currently, passengers and travelers who need to alter their travel plans and change their ticket bookings, first need to cancel their confirmed tickets and then rebook. It often incur cancellation fees, including 25% deduction in fare if you are cancelling between 48 and 12 hours before departure. Same way a cancellation fee of almost 50% incur if cancellation is closer to the departure time.
IRCTC is set to introduce new cancellation system with an aim to eliminate these charges and make things convenient for travelers. This way, passengers will be able to modify their travel plans without the hassle of cancellation fees and rebooking.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use new rescheduling system:
STEP 1: First step is to select a new travel date online based on seat availability
STEP 2: Now, if you see that the fare for the new date is higher, you only need to pay the difference.
STEP 3: If you notice that the fare is same or is lower, then you will not be charged any extra payment.
One of the striking features of this new rescheduling system is that it is integrated with IRCTC’s central reservation system in real time. This ensures instant ticket updates along with simplifying process.
You just have to log in and select your existing booking. After this, choose a new date and the system will verify the availability instantly.
The railways have implemented several other measures to improve ticketing transparency and efficiency. Since October 1, only users with Aadhaar authentication can book general reservation tickets during the first 15 minutes after bookings open. Additionally, the advance reservation period was shortened from 120 to 60 days last year, helping the railways better manage actual travel demand.
