In July 2025, India’s telecom sector showed mixed results, as per the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel continued to grow by adding thousands of new subscribers, while Vodafone-Idea and BSNL struggled with a further drop in their user base. What stood out in the report was a big jump in Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests, suggesting that more people are switching networks instead of sticking with their current operators. On the other hand, Vodafone-Idea suffered a major setback, losing 3,59,199 subscribers, while state-run BSNL’s user base declined by 1,00,707 despite its recent launch of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services in select South Indian states, including Hyderabad. The TRAI data revealed that while the overall growth in telecom users remains slow, more people are switching operators. In July alone, 1.54 crore users switched from one operator to another, underlining the tough competition in the telecom market and the demand for better connectivity and services.
By the end of July 2025, India’s mobile subscriber base had climbed to 116.35 crore, up from 116.03 crore in June – a modest growth of 0.04 per cent. The total wireless base, including 5G FWA users, rose to 117.19 crore. Interestingly, 5G FWA adoption is picking up, crossing 8.4 million users. Reliance Jio leads with 64 lakh FWA users, followed by Airtel at 19 lakh.
