Qualcomm is set to launch Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip as its new flagship mobile processor. The company announced the name of the upcoming chipset through a press release on their official website. Notably, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit 2025, scheduled to kick off from September 23. The three-day event will wrap up on September 5. While earlier leaks and reports suggested that the SoC will be named Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, Qualcomm has chosen a different moniker.

Why Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5?

According to a blog post, Don McGuire (Senior VP and CMO, Qualcomm) confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will succeed last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. McGuire also mentioned that the ‘Elite’ moniker will serve only the flagship mobile chipsets made by the company.

With the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, Qualcomm is returning to its previous naming schemes. The company launched the Snapdragon 8 Elite back in October 2024, shifting from its Snapdragon 8 Gen X naming.

Previous leaks had suggested that the chipmaker will proceed with the Elite X branding to name the new chipset ‘Snapdragon 8 Elite 2’. Then, reports surfaced that the company is launching the upcoming mobile processor with a simpler moniker – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

Recently, a tipster claimed that Qualcomm’s next flagship chipset (then thought to be Snapdragon 8 Gen 5) would use TSMC’s 3nm process technology (N3P). It is said to be built upon a custom Oryon CPU architecture, also supporting ARM’s Scalable Matrix Extensions (SME) – which could be used to execute AI and machine learning tasks faster. The chipset is said to offer up to 20% improvements in single and multi-core performance.

The blog post also mentions that Qualcomm will be hosting its Snapdragon Summit 2025, starting from September 23. The company is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC during the summit. The second day will follow with the showcase of new products.
