It looks like Nvidia’s long-rumoured Arm-based PC chip might finally launch this year. According to a new report from Taiwan’s United Daily News, Nvidia is partnering with Alienware to launch a laptop that will feature an Arm-based APU co-developed with MediaTek.
Here’s what we know so far.
The report claims Nvidia’s new Arm-powered chip could launch in late 2025 or early 2026. This new ARM based chip will launch with Alienware-branded laptops. This wouldn’t be just a standard CPU but, we’re talking about an accelerated processing unit (APU), which combines an Arm CPU with Nvidia’s powerful new Blackwell GPU architecture. The goal is to create a Windows on Arm gaming machine that doesn’t rely on outdated emulation workarounds or underpowered graphics.
The main problem with ARM processors is that the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips are the only real players in the Arm PC market. These chips are not very gamer-friendly making it not ideal for gamers. Most Windows games have to run through Microsoft’s Prism emulation, which leads to compatibility issues and underwhelming performance, especially with Qualcomm’s weaker GPUs.
With Nvidia now working on an ARM processor, this new APU delivers the kind of graphical power Nvidia is known for. This can potentially fix the performance bottleneck holding back Arm-based gaming laptops.
The rumours of Nvidia’s Arm-based PC chip first surfaced back in 2023. A recent leak from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead allegedly showed off the chip and sources say it could have a power draw of 80W to 120W, making it ideal for high-performance laptops. Even Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has already confirmed that the company has plans for Arm-based CPUs in its AI hardware. So, all these leaks and rumours clearly paint a picture that Nvidia is all geared up to launch this new ARM processor soon.
With the scene heating up, Nvidia isn’t the only one challenging Qualcomm. MediaTek is also rumoured to be working on its own Arm CPU, and reports suggest AMD could be developing an Arm chip for future Microsoft Surface devices. This shows that all the brands are ready to compete in the race for Arm chips.
