Back in May this year, Microsoft announced a controversial feature called Windows Recall. The feature takes snapshots of everything you do on your PC, allowing you to revisit specific pages or tasks that you did on the machine. The feature stirred up discussions about privacy and security and then was delayed indefinitely. Now, however, Microsoft has finally announced the release month of the revised Windows Recall feature. And its launch is not too far away.
Microsoft’s revised Windows Recall feature has been announced to launch in October this year. However, it will be a preview feature at release, available to testers signed up for the Windows Insider program. Microsoft has said that it has considered Security as its top priority.
“As previously shared on June 13, we have adjusted our release approach to leverage the valuable expertise of our Windows Insider community prior to making Recall available for all Copilot+ PCs. Security continues to be our top priority and when Recall is available for Windows Insiders in October we will publish a blog with more details.”
The Windows Recall feature will go into testing with the Insider community soon and then be available to public Copilot+ PCs. While we knew it earlier, it’s better to emphasize that you need a Copilot+ PC to make use of the Windows Recall AI feature.
To put it simply, Windows Recall takes snapshots of your Windows 11 PC that’s under the Copilot+ PC program and then creates a timeline that you can access anytime later. That said, you can instantly find something that you saw on your PC sometime back. This is useful for many creators or even for professionals trying to complete their tasks on their Windows machines.
If you are thinking about privacy, don’t fret, Microsoft says that the feature works locally. All the snapshots that are captured are encrypted and stored locally on the device.
“To create an explorable visual timeline, Recall periodically takes a snapshot of what appears on your screen. These images are encrypted, stored and analyzed locally, using on-device AI capabilities to understand their context. When logged into your Copilot+ PC, you can easily retrace your steps visually using Recall to find things from apps, websites, images and documents that you’ve seen, operating like your own virtual and completely private “photographic memory.”
