Google has rolled out a long-awaited update for its Find My Device app, introducing a biometric login option. This new feature, part of version 3.1.173-1, allows users to securely access the app using biometric authentication such as a fingerprint, face scan, or, alternatively, a PIN code. The update aims to enhance both security and user convenience, simplifying the login process. Also Read: Google Pixel 8 phones will now be hard to lose with new Find My Device feature
Previously, accessing Find My Device required users to input their Google account password whenever they opened the app. While there was a “Don’t ask again” option, this posed security risks since anyone with access to your unlocked phone could enter the app and manage your devices. The introduction of biometric login strikes a better balance between protecting your personal information and making the app easier to use. By leveraging biometric authentication, users can enjoy a faster and more secure login process without compromising their device’s safety. Also Read: Lost your Android phone? In earlier versions, users could choose whether to enable biometric login, but with the latest update, this feature is automatically activated by default. This means that once you’ve set up biometric authentication or a screen lock on your device, you won’t need to re-enter your password each time. However, if biometric options are not configured, you’ll still need to enter your Google account password to gain access.
Google is also working on a revamped interface for tablet users of the Find My Device app. The redesigned layout introduces a side panel for quick access to additional options, streamlining navigation. Though it’s unclear when this update will be publicly released, it signals Google’s effort to improve the app’s functionality across various devices.
This update is part of Google’s broader commitment to strengthening security across its ecosystem. The company has been enhancing its biometric security measures for Find My Device and other critical apps like Chrome. Additionally, Google’s recent innovations, such as the AI-driven Gemini Live and enhanced Google Lens, highlight the company’s focus on blending cutting-edge technology with user-friendly security features.
