Apple may be working on thinnest iPhone to replace Plus model

The iPhone may soon become a lot thinner than existing models. A new report has claimed Apple is working on a “significantly thinner” phone that will be a part of next year’s iPhone 17 series to replace the Plus model. This upcoming iPhone model will represent the biggest redesign in the modern Apple smartphone, featuring premium materials like aluminium in its chassis and retaining the Dynamic Island. Is a slimmer iPhone on the cards?

According to The Information, Apple could be working on what could bring an iPhone X-level jump in the series. While the iPhone’s design is not final, Apple is looking at different options to ensure it turns out slimmer than existing iPhone models. Apart from featuring an aluminium chassis, the upcoming iPhone may have an improved FaceTime camera and Face ID sensors in a pill-shaped cutout, known as the Dynamic Island. Apple could also change the camera position on this model, relocating sensors from the edge to the centre where they are less likely to be obscured by fingers. This will mark a major change in the iPhone design where cameras have stayed on the left, although their positions have changed yearly. For instance, the iPhone 16 could feature vertically stacked cameras instead of diagonal. Its screen may be bigger than the existing base iPhone model and smaller than the Pro Max, meaning it will be between 6.12 and 6.69 inches.

It will also be expensive

The thinner iPhone model is expected to arrive next year, so if you are interested, there is another detail you should keep in mind. It could be costlier than the existing Plus and even the Pro Max model. The iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,59,900, so the thinner iPhone may cost even more in what could be the most expensive iPhone model yet. This also means that you could not buy the Plus model next year if that matters to you. Apple could launch the last Plus model — iPhone 16 Plus — later this year and change the lineup next year.
