NASA has launched a collection of Instagram filters that users can try to get a glimpse of space. These are no ordinary filters, but rather 3D filters that were made using the data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes. With the launch of these AR “Instagram experiences,” the space agency appears to let people experience the universe virtually.
NASA launched these filters to commemorate Chandra’s 25th anniversary. The 3D filters show images of astronomical phenomena such as Vela Pulsar, Tycho’s Supernova Remnant, Helix Nebula, and Cat’s Eye Nebula. These images are extracted from Chandra X-ray data and ultraviolet, optical, and infrared.
As per NASA, these filters were made from 3D models gathered from observation from other telescopes. The process also involved mathematical modelling to bring the cosmic muses. Such methods have been possible due to the new techniques available, allowing the general public to experience the cosmos virtually through filters.
NASA’s 3D Instagram filters sound fun. Here’s how you can access and use them.
You do not need to update Instagram to use the new 3D filters. All you need to do is open the app and access the filters on NASA Chandra X-ray’s profile page. Follow the steps below to see exactly how to you can get and use the new 3D filters.
Step 1: Open Instagram
Step 2: Search”NASAChandraXray” profile
Step 3: Tap on the effects icon next to the Reels icon.
Step 4: You should now see five different AR filters. Choose one and tap on Try it.
Step 5: Once you select the filter and tap on Try it, Instagram will open an in-app camera showing the filter applied on the screen. By turning to the front camera, you can place some of the models on the ground or table and learn about them by rotating them by tapping the model and sliding your finger.
That’s how you can use NASA’s 3D Instagram filters on your Android and iOS devices. This is a great way for space enthusiasts to explore astronomical phenomena virtually.
NASA’s 3D filters will be available for free for at least six months.
