Everything we know about iOS 18

Apple’s iOS 18 will be a big upgrade to the existing iOS 17. There are a host of changes that you can expect from the new iPhone operating system. Starting from home screen customization to AI features, here’s everything you need to know about iOS 18.

Home screen customization

iOS 18 may finally allow users to customize their home screen. This means you may be able to place apps anywhere on the screen. While that doesn’t sound Apple-like, that’s what the rumour mill says.

Control Center changes

We all use the Control Center on our iPhones daily. This year, we may get an update to the Control Center with a design change and some added features. Instead of going through Settings, we may be able to organize Control Center actions on the interface itself.

Improved Siri

This time around, we could finally get an updated Siri that’s less dumb. Apple may power Siri with some AI features that may make it useful, giving Google Assistant (which is slowly turning into Google Gemini) a run for its money. The exact features are unknown, but hopefully, it will be way more responsive than now.

AI-generated Emoji

Apple is said to bring AI-generated emojis on iPhones with iOS 18. This means people may be able to create custom emojis using promotes. The feature will likely be powered by on-device AI.

AI photo editing

Photo editing experience may be enhanced with AI, as we may see some cool photo editing features like AI erasers and others in iOS 18. The exact details for the same are unknown as of now.

Voice Memo transcriptions

We may see speech-to-text in the iPhone’s voice recorder app with on-device AI-enabled by iOS 18. So similar to Google’s and Samsung’s live transcription, iPhones may also let people get transcription of voice memos.

New Passwords app

As per a recent report, we may see a dedicated Passwords app on iPhones. Apple’s new Passwords app could be powered by iCloud Keychain and will likely work similarly to third-party apps like LastPass and 1Password.

Redesigned Notes

The Notes app on iOS 18 may finally get the much-needed design changes. Currently, the Notes app on iPhones has a modest design and basic features. However, in iOS 18, we could get an updated, revamped Notes app.

RCS

Apple will mostly comply with the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. RCS is a messaging protocol on Google Messages. Like iMessage, RCS on Android enables a fun messaging experience and is end-to-end encrypted. Although Apple hasn’t announced the availability and is expected to do that at WWDC, RCS has been quietly activated in some regions like Japan, as per Mishaal Rahman. RCS on iPhones may bring fun features, but the green bubbles will likely remain. We should know more about RCS adaptability on iPhone at the event.

Accessibility features

Lastly, iOS 18 will bring some accessibility features, which Apple announced last month. The features include AI-based Eye Tracking, Music Haptics, Vocal Shortcuts for Siri, Vehicle Motion Cues, Voice Control, and more.

Other than this, there could be some other AI features that Apple could leverage from AI firms that it acquired recently. For the unversed, Apple acquired Darwin AI and Datakalab. Rumours suggest that Apple may announce a ChatGPT-like chatbot, however, details for the same are scant at the moment.

Besides iOS 18, Apple will also likely unveil the iPadOS 18 for iPads, watchOS 11 for Apple Watch, macOS 15 for iMac/MacBooks, and tvOS 18 for Apple TV.
