OpenAI is planning a major expansion in India, reportedly setting up a new data centre that will hold massive capacity. As per a recent report from Bloomberg, the data centre from ChatGPT owner OpenAI will hold the capacity of at least 1 gigawatt. By this move, the tech giant aims to strengthen its presence in one of its largest markets by user base.
While the exact location and timeline are still under wraps, CEO Sam Altman might announce more details in his upcoming visit to India in September.
As per Bloomberg, OpenAI has officially registered itself as a legal entity in India and, hence, is building a local team. To recall, OpenAI announced its first office in New Delhi and is planning to open it later this year. This signals a significant step toward creating AI solutions that will be tailored for the Indian market.
The upcoming and planned data center will be a part of OpenAI’s Stargate-branded AI infrastructure expansion in Asia. The initiative is backed by companies like SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle. It also involves investments of up to $500 billion to support advanced AI development.
By opening an India data centre, the tech giant will establish India as a central hub for its operations and enhance performance. Additionally, it will also increase data processing capacity for local users.
To support its India operations and data centre, OpenAI has announced several roles, including Account Director positions for Digital Natives, Large Enterprise, and Strategic Accounts.
To recall, OpenAI recently launched its most affordable subscription plan in India at Rs 399 per month, aiming to make AI services accessible to millions of users. This approach aligns with the company’s vision of broadening AI adoption while offering tools that meet local needs.
