OpenAI has announced the rollout of its latest upgrade for ChatGPT – the ChatGPT agent. It is basically built to handle more complex, real-world tasks. As per the AI giant, this new agentic model combines the strengths of OpenAI’s previous tools, such as Deep Research and Operator. ChatGPT Agent is designed to be more than just a chatbot – it’s a smart assistant that can research, take actions, analyse data, and complete multi-step tasks.
What it does? It brings together:
All of this happens within a single chat, with ChatGPT Agent switching tools on the fly as needed.
The agent has access to a range of tools, from a visual browser and terminal to direct APIs. It chooses the best way to complete a task, whether that means filtering search results, executing code, or creating documents, OpenAI explained. Most importantly, it keeps track of your goals throughout the process so you don’t have to start over at every step. This smart coordination makes it useful for tasks like financial analysis, academic work, spreadsheet editing, and even investment research, making it far more than just a question-and-answer bot.
Talking about the safety, OpenAI says it has put in extensive safety checks, especially around prompt injection, a technique used to manipulate AI systems. Since this model can access and use outside tools and data, the company has taken extra precautions to avoid misuse, particularly in sensitive areas like biology and chemistry.
The ChatGPT agent falls under OpenAI’s High Capability classification in these domains, triggering a strict safety protocol under their Preparedness Framework.
The rollout has already begun. OpenAI has confirmed that Pro users will get access by the end of the day, while the Plus and Team users will follow in the next few days. Enterprise and Edu users, on the other hand, will see it in the coming weeks.
