ChatGPT Surges Past 2.5 Billion Prompts a Day as Users Worldwide Shift from Google to AI for Answers

ChatGPT is not just an AI chatbot, it helps students write essays to assisting professional in code and content generation. OpenAI’s chatbot has quickly become a household name for professionals and one of the most widely used AI tools across the globe. With growing popularity and demand, the reliance on AI for everyday tasks has expanded rapidly. However, not just popularity, ChatGPT is now posing a serious challenge to traditional search engines like Google.

2.5 Billion Prompts Daily

ChatGPT currently receives over 2.5 billion prompts daily according to the data provided to Axios. It is estimated that of these, about 330 million are of users in the United States alone. These statistics were later corroborated by OpenAI spokesman, Rob Friedlander to The Verge, which affirms the increasing monopoly of the platform.

The growth of ChatGPT is staggering and in just eight months, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman states that the platform received over 1 billion queries per day, which is a heavy data. The figure has now more than doubled. Additionally, the weekly active users on ChatGPT also jumped from 300 million in December to over 500 million by March. This highlights the consistent upward trend in company’s growth.

Surpassed Google

Although ChatGPT still trails behind Google which averages around 14 billion searches per day, the AI chatbot’s rapid rise is beginning to make a noticeable impact. Analytics firm SEMrush recently ranked ChatGPT as the fifth-most-visited website in the world, with 4.6 billion visits in May 2025. Additionally, data from Backlinko shows that ChatGPT now controls 62.5% of the AI tool market, with roughly 10 million paid subscribers.

ChatGPT Free Version Popularity

Despite its premium offerings, the majority of users still prefer the free version of ChatGPT. According to Axios, this remains the most accessed version globally.
