The suicidal cases in India are rising at an alarming rate. A last year report titled “Student Suicides: An Epidemic Sweeping India” has revealed that the student suicides have outpaced the population growth and even the overall suicide trends. To tackle this situation, AIIMS-Delhi has introduced an AI-powered mental wellness programme, dubbed Never Alone. Also Read: Gemini App Gets THIS Big Update Which Is Already Available With ChatGPT

The AIIMS-Delhi’s Never Alone offers 24/7 virtual as well as offline consultation. The mental health experts will be accessible via a web-based app on WhatsApp. The important part of the initiative is that the app provides personalised and secure mental health screening at an affordable price. It costs 70 paise per student per day for institutions with 5 thousand students. That means the service is available for institutions, and they will have to approach AIIMS-Delhi or other institutions to subscribe to the service. “The program aims to minimise stigma surrounding suicide and increase awareness among students,” Dr. Nand Kumar, Professor of Psychiatry at AIIMS Delhi. Apart from the AIIMS-Delhi, the AIIMS-Bhubaneswar and the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) in Shahdara have also launched the same programme for mental health.
According to the World Health Organisation, one person dies by suicide every 45 seconds globally. Shockingly, around 73 per cent of these deaths occur in low and middle-income countries—India being one of them. The crisis has only intensified in recent years. As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 1,70,924 people died by suicide in 2022, marking the highest toll in over five decades.
As per a report by PTI, Dr. Nand Kumar, Professor of Psychiatry at AIIMS-Delhi, has mentioned that student suicides represent a major public health concern, not just in India, but across the globe. In India, young adults between 18 to 30 years accounted for a staggering 35 per cent of all suicides in 2022, which is the largest share among all age groups.
