In a bid to curb misuse and safeguard users, WhatsApp suspended more than 98 lakh accounts in India in June 2025. The Meta-owned messaging service announced the figures in its latest monthly report, saying that almost 20 lakh of those accounts were removed proactively – before any user reports were received. The action is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for its users. news Also Read: WhatsApp’s New iPhone Update Brings A Liquid Glass Design, But Also A Strange Mute Bug

16,000+ Users Filed Ban Appeals

As per the platform’s India Monthly Report, 23,596 complaints were received by WhatsApp in June. Of these, 16,069 were account ban-related complaints. After reviewing the appeals, WhatsApp took action on 756 accounts, either reinstating wrongly banned accounts or confirming the bans. news Also Read: Meta Wants Employees To Build The Metaverse 5X Faster Using AI

The rest of the complaints were attributable to other categories like account support, product issues, and user security. In total, 1,001 accounts were taken action against upon receiving the complaints for the month. news Also Read: Now Apply For Delhi Govt Documents In WhatsApp Chat, No Office Visit Needed

Proactive Action to Detect Abuse

Out of the total 98 lakh bans, around 19.79 lakh accounts were proactively banned, meaning WhatsApp detected suspicious or abusive activity even before users flagged it. The platform says it’s more effective to stop harmful activity early rather than respond to it later.

To achieve this, WhatsApp employs an automated abuse detection system that tracks user activity at three levels – account sign-up, messaging, and reacting to adverse feedback such as user complaints or blocks.

These monthly reports are released as part of compliance by the company with India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Night Mode for Low-Light Photos in the Works

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is also testing a new Night Mode feature for its Android app. Spotted on beta versions, this feature will enable users to take improved photographs in low-light environments by adding brightness and clarity – without imposing any artificial filters.
