X (formerly Twitter) has just introduced its biggest update keeping privacy in mind while communicating on the platform. The tech giant has introduced its ‘Chat’, a redesigned and secure version of its direct messaging system. The Elon Musk-led company aims to bring a safer and flexible way to talk, share, and connect on the platform in a more secure way. The ‘Chat’ option promises tighter security and a more modern set of communication tools.

Availability

The ‘Chat’ feature is available for iOS and the web starting today.

‘Chat’ Features

One of the biggest highlights of ‘Chat’ is that it is end-to-end encrypted and ensures that your messages and files are protected between sender and receiver. While the company admits that some areas still need improvement, however, the upgrade will keep most of the conversations private.

Areas that are still not encrypted are Metadata, such as delivery time or receiver info. Other than this, the tech giant also admits the fact that the platform acknowledges that users currently have no built-in way to detect a man-in-the-middle attack if one ever occurred. Reportedly, the platform will further add tools for verification of messages and authenticity along with device identity.

Privacy Features

‘Chat’ also introduced several privacy-oriented tools, such as users can send disappearing messages, and hence, chats will be auto-erased after a chosen time limit. Another major upgrade is to let people block screenshots entirely. Additionally, it will also alert users if someone is trying to take a screenshot of their conversation.

Messages can also be edited or deleted, giving users more flexibility over what stays in the chat window.

Voice, Video, and File Sharing

Other than messaging, the app has also expanded ‘Chat’ with voice and video calls. Not only this, but you can also share files with your contacts. The company also confirmed that in the future, it will be adding voice notes too. All previous messages from the older DM system are expected to appear in Chat automatically, making the transition seamless.

To recall, X first introduced encrypted DM’s in 2023; however, it got temporarily suspended in early 2025 to bring more stability and improvements to the feature.
