Netflix is once again in the news, but this time it’s not for a blockbuster release. Instead, the streaming giant is facing a wave of subscription cancellations after Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X (formerly Twitter), urged his followers to quit the platform. In a post on X, Musk wrote, “Cancel Netflix for the health of your children.” Soon after, social media was flooded with screenshots from users cancelling their Netflix plans and encouraging others to follow suit. Musk’s comments came in response to a post that accused Netflix of promoting what it called a “Transgender Woke Agenda” through some of its content. Musk has long positioned himself as a vocal critic of “wokeism,” often describing it as a dangerous ideology. Back in 2022, he had even warned that the so-called “woke mind virus” had the potential to destroy civilisation if left unchecked. Also Read: Elon Musk’s xAI Fires 500 Employees? The latest controversy has given rise to another online debate, with some users rallying behind Musk’s stance while others criticise the calls for a boycott, saying it unfairly targets diverse representation in media.
The Netflix row isn’t the only front where Musk is taking aim at what he calls biased or “woke” platforms. Earlier this week, he revealed that his AI company xAI is building “Grokipedia,” a Wikipedia alternative powered by its Grok chatbot. Musk has repeatedly criticised the Wikimedia Foundation for what he claims is political bias.
Meanwhile, Musk’s social media platform X is also dealing with legal challenges in India. The company has announced plans to appeal a recent Karnataka High Court decision that upheld the government’s authority to order content takedowns under the IT Act. The court stressed that platforms cannot defy regulations in the name of free expression, particularly when sensitive issues are involved.
With Musk fuelling fresh controversy online, Netflix now finds itself at the centre of another cultural and political battle – this time, one that directly threatens its subscriber base.
