WhatsApp is testing a new tool for Android users that will allow them to transfer their chats easily with a QR code. The feature called “Transfer chat history” will make it easier for people to transfer their chat history between devices without using Google Drive. A similar feature was first discovered last year in the beta update. Now, however, WhatsApp is likely testing more methods of the feature, which means we could see it coming to the stable version of the app soon.
According to WABetaInfo, which is a popular and unofficial WhatsApp news portal with a good track record, the Transfer chat history feature is visible on the beta version of the app on Android. WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.13.6 brings a chat transfer tool that lets you transfer chat history from an old phone with a QR code. This eliminates the need to use Google Drive, which we used so far to get our chats back from the old Android phone to the Android device.
As of now, only Android users can use the feature in the said beta version. It’s unknown if Apple will also bring the feature to iOS. It is worth noting that WhatsApp on Android uses Google Drive to backup the chat history, on iOS, it uses iCloud. That said, the feature should be useful for even iOS devices. But there are no details if we will get it anytime soon.
However, if it has arrived on the beta version of Android, we expect to see it on iOS sometime later, although it’s just a speculation. If the feature is planned for public release, we should hear more from WhatsApp soon. Once any further details are revealed, we will update you on the same.
In other news about Meta-owned WhatsApp, the company is also working on several other features across platforms. Recently, we saw a “Recent community media” feature that lets users see recent media from all communities in one place. Additionally, WhatsApp is testing another feature that blocks people from taking a screenshot of your profile phone. The feature was recently spotted on iOS, however, it was seen on Android beta sometime back. We expect it to be rolled out to the public soon, before this chat transfer feature arrives.
