Internet has a place for all sorts of content including adult content. So, it isn’t exactly surprising that social media companies have started embracing adult content or Not Safe For Work (NSFW) content. And the latest company to allow such content on its platform is X.
Elon Musk owned X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced that it is allowing the creation and distribution of adult content on its platform. In a post on the platform, the company said that it has introduced Adult Content and Violent Content policies to bring clarity as to what can and what cannot be shared on X.
We have launched Adult Content and Violent Content policies to bring more clarity of our Rules and transparency into enforcement of these areas. These policies replace our former Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies – but what we enforce against hasn’t changed.

According to X’s adult content policy, users can share and distribute ‘consensually produced adult nudity or sexual behavior’ on the platform. “You may share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it’s properly labeled and not prominently displayed,” X wrote in a support page.
“We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression. We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality,” the company added.
But, there’s some caveats.
While users can share adult content on X, it need to be appropriately labelled. “…we ask that you please adjust your media settings. Doing so places all your images and videos behind a content warning that needs to be acknowledged before your media can be viewed. You can also add a one-time content warning on individual posts,” X wrote.
“If you continue to fail marking your posts, we will adjust your account settings for you,” the company added.
In addition to this, X said that while it is allowing users to share adult content on its platform, it does ‘not allow sharing Adult Content in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.’ X also said that users who are under 18 years of age or who do not include a birth date on their profile cannot click to view content marked as ‘Adult Content’ on the platform.
