Adobe has quietly dropped a brand-new photography app for iPhones. This is not just another camera app, as it uses computational photography to deliver high-quality photos. The app is called Project Indigo and is already turning heads, as it’s developed by the same engineer who helped build the Pixel’s legendary camera software.
Project Indigo is Adobe’s experimental photography app built to deliver DSLR-like quality with the help of AI. The app is available on iPhones and, instead of capturing a single shot, it takes multiple frames in quick bursts and fuses them together. This results in high dynamic range, reduced noise, and greater detail.
According to Adobe Labs, Indigo aims to deliver natural, SLR-like image quality, especially noticeable on larger screens. The app also offers full manual controls, including focus, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. This makes it perfect for photographers and pro shooters who want to experiment more within the app.
This app is currently available only on the iPhone 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max, and all iPhone 14 models and above. Adobe recommends using the iPhone 15 Pro or newer for the best experience. The best part is that the app doesn’t require an Adobe account login, making it easier and hassle-free to use.
The app is the brainchild of Marc Levoy and Florian Kainz, two renowned names in the world of digital imaging. In a detailed blog, they explain how they simulate realistic shadows, preserve details, reduce noise, and avoid the over processed look often associated with AI photography. They also revealed that Project Indigo serves as a testbed for experimental features such as reflection removal, portrait mode, video capture, and more. Additionally, Adobe is also working on an Android version, which will make the app more accessible in the future.
