Halo, a new startup, has launched its first product – the Halo X smart glasses. The glasses come with an in-built display and artificial intelligence capabilities, designed to continuously record audio, transcribe conversations, and enable instant recall of past information. The device also integrates AI assistants to answer queries directly on the glasses’ display. Halo’s co-founders, AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, previously created the I-Xray app, which gained attention for its integration with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. That project drew criticism for enabling invasive surveillance, and their new product is now being flagged for similar privacy concerns. The Halo X smart glasses are equipped with a microphone that records the wearer’s surroundings at all times. The audio is transcribed to text and the original recording deleted. The device can playback past conversations, and provide contextual help, however, it does not have any visible indicator to show others they are being recorded, and thus poses privacy concerns. What’s interesting is that the glasses don’t have a camera or speakers, with text-only display to just present output. As co-founder Caine Ardayfio described, the device was intended to look like regular glasses and naturally blend into a user’s daily life. But he acknowledged that buyers should comply with their local consent laws, as recording conversations may not be legal in some areas.
The smart glasses use two different AI systems to power their functions. Google’s Gemini handles reasoning, conversation, and mathematical tasks, while Perplexity AI is used for pulling information from the internet. Users can ask questions directly, and the responses are shown in text form on the glasses’ display.
The Halo X smart glasses are priced at $249 (around Rs 22,570 including conversion and fees) and are available for pre-order now. Shipping is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
