Vodafone Idea (Vi) has officially rolled out its 5G services in Kolkata, making it the second city in West Bengal to get access after Siliguri. The company seems to be moving steadily, adding more cities to its 5G map every few weeks.
The launch is part of Vi’s wider plan to expand its 5G footprint across India while trying to catch up with competitors in the telecom space. Currently, Vi’s 5G services are already live in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Indore, and more.
To support this rollout, Vodafone Idea has added 850 new network sites across Kolkata and other regions in West Bengal. What’s the goal? It is to improve overall coverage and network experience, especially as more users shift to 5G-ready smartphones.
The company says its 5G services will be available to all users with VoLTE-enabled phones launched after January 1, 2020. So if you’ve got a relatively recent smartphone, you’re good to go.
Postpaid users also have a few choices:
Vi is currently the only provider offering unlimited 5G on lower-tier plans (less than 2GB/day). With the launch now live, users in Kolkata can start using Vi 5G by simply recharging with eligible plans. No SIM change is required, and most 5G phones are already supported.
More cities in West Bengal are expected to follow soon. Vi’s focus now seems to be on steadily expanding while ensuring the experience stays smooth.
