The rising threat of spam calls and cyber threats is surrounding us daily. To tackle this, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has launched an AI-powered Vi Protect initiative during India Mobile Congress 2025 (IMC 2025). The initiative comes with two main measures — an AI-based voice spam detection system and an AI-driven cyber defence and Incident Response System. Vi Protect is designed as a unified safety program for Vi customers, networks, and enterprise users. It brings together several existing and new security features under one umbrella. The first part of the initiative focuses on identifying spam calls and messages, while the second strengthens Vi’s backend network security through advanced AI systems capable of detecting and responding to cyber incidents faster than ever. Based on the details shared by the telecom giant, Vi’s new Voice Spam Detection System uses artificial intelligence, web crawlers, and customer feedback to identify and flag suspicious or fraudulent calls before they even reach you. When a number is suspected of being spam, you will see a ‘Suspected Spam’ tag on their call screen, helping them decide whether to pick up. Unlike third-party caller ID apps, this feature works within Vi’s network, which helps ensure better accuracy and privacy.
It also includes spam filtering for text messages and an International Calling Display, which helps you recognise genuine international numbers. Vi says its AI-powered threat analysis engine, integrated with its DNS, SMS, and voice gateways, can detect and learn from new threat patterns continuously.
The second part of the Vi Protect initiative is designed to protect Vi’s core network and enterprise operations. Using agentic and generative AI models, the new Cyber Defence and Incident Response System can detect, analyse, and neutralise threats in under an hour.
The defence process follows five layers: Anomaly Detection, Contextualisation and Categorisation, Interface Engine Agent, Suggestive Intelligence, and Human Validation. Together, these allow Vi to respond quickly while minimising false positives.
Vi has already flagged over 600 million spam and scam calls and messages using its AI tools. Apart from these, Vodafone-Idea (Vi) are also planning to roll out a real-time URL protection feature soon, which will scan and block suspicious links to stop phishing or malware attacks before they spread.
