There is nothing new! It is a usual design echoing the Samsung design that we have seen in several devices by the tech giant. The triple camera setup is housed in a single vertical camera island, and the right-side edge features a power button doubled as a fingerprint sensor and volume controls. The back panel is of plastic, which is prone to smudges and fingerprints.
The Galaxy A17 5G features a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. While the display is bright enough and colours are punchy, however, one of the Achilles heels is Samsung's Infinity-U display design with that dew-drop camera notch on the front. And thick bezels too, which seems extremely outdated in 2025!
Under the hood, it is powered by the Exynos 1350 5nm chipset with Mali-G68 coupled with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. So far, the basic usage suggests it to be a simple daily driver for mundane tasks such as calling, texting, some camera shots, listening to music and social media scrolling without any hiccups. What about gaming? We will talk about that in the long-term review.
It runs on One UI 7.0 based on Android 15, which brings enough customisation options in terms of wallpapers, widgets and themes. Pre-loaded apps? There are some apps which might be useful for you, such as Netflix, Spotify, PhonePe, Snapchat, some Microsoft apps, Gaming Hub, and Samsung Free – all of these can be uninstalled. However, the Galaxy Store by Samsung is something which you have to handle without an option to be uninstalled.
For photography, it features a 50MP Main camera, a 5MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP macro camera, while the front features a 13MP selfie camera. The same as the previous Galaxy A16 5G. New addition? The support of OIS with the main camera. In the daylight, the camera captures decent photos with punchy colours and satisfactory details.
The battery and charging are also quite usual stuff -- a 5000mAh battery with 25W charging. It easily lasts a day and even more with casual usage.
Available in three colours -- Black, Blue, and Grey -- the Galaxy A17 5G is priced at Rs 18,999 for the base variant of 6GB RAM and 128GB Storage.
At first glance, the Galaxy A17 5G feels like a familiar Samsung formula wrapped - the design isn’t exciting, the display is vibrant and bright, though the thick bezels and dated notch remind you it’s not a premium device. Day-to-day usage so far has been smooth, but we’ll need more time to see how it handles heavier apps and gaming. Similarly, while the addition of OIS to the 50MP camera is promising, we’ll reserve judgement on photo quality until the full review. For now, the A17 5G comes across as a simple budget phone that plays it safe, without trying to do much new.
