Samsung is known for its innovation, and it looks like they’re working on something that might take the smartphone space by storm. Samsung has recently filed a patent for a modular phone, suggesting they’re working on a device with a replaceable lens. This patent was filed last year and published on April 24, 2025, reveals a device that could allow users to swap out lenses for different optical effects, enhancing the way users interact with their cameras.
This is the outer body of the phone that contains all the essential components. There is a replaceable unit that attaches to the device’s body. This is similar to the Moment lenses designed for iPhones. The image sensor works with the lens to deliver high-quality photos.
The most interesting part is the motor/actuator, which enables the lens assembly and sensor to move. This allows for focus adjustments, optical zooming, and potentially adds extra stabilization for sharper and steadier shots.
The lens assembly itself is removable and can be attached to the device housing but can be swapped out. The motor doesn’t sit on the lens assembly but on the outer body of the phone, making the design simpler and more compact. This actuator will help with adjustments like focus and stabilization.
There’s also the possibility of a rotating ring for zoom functionality, giving more DSLR feel. The device will detect the type of lens attached via methods like magnetic sensing within the lens for identification, RFID tags to identify the lens type and reflectors or resistors to communicate with the device. Once the lens is identified, the phone’s processor can automatically adjust settings, such as the focal length and lens positions, for optimal performance.
This looks like just the beginning, as the patent further reveals additional modules such as extra displays, flash units, batteries, fans, compasses, and even smartwatch-like attachments. It’s a perfect way for users to customise their phone, potentially giving them more control over both the smartphone’s capabilities.
