A new Netflix scam is currently on the rise.

Story Highlights

  • Netflix users need to watch out for a new scam.
  • The phishing scam involves fraud emails.
  • Customers are being lured into entering credit card details.

Netflix users have lately been feeling bittersweet because of the recent changes to password sharing. Most users who can no longer enjoy Netflix at reduced costs through password sharing look for alternate ways and have become a target of scammers. A new phishing scam is on the rise where Netflix customers receive emails telling them that their accounts have expired but there is a way they can receive 90 days of free membership.

New Netflix scam

According to 9to5Mac, several people, including some of their staff members, have received emails more than once, announcing that their Netflix accounts “expired.” The report said these emails look genuine at first glance, which could lead most users to believe the lie about Netflix account expiry. The emails have proper Netflix branding and are well-written — exactly how regular Netflix mailers are. However, a thorough look will remove the disguise.

How to confirm a phishing scam

The report has mentioned how you can figure out if they are phishing scam emails. First, you can check the email address the email was sent from. If it does not carry a Netflix domain, it is likely a fraud mail. The next thing that can hint at the suspicious nature of these emails is the offer they have mentioned. A 90-day free membership extension is too good to be true, especially at a time when Netflix is cracking down on non-paying subscribers. The report further mentioned that the website that opens after clicking the “Extend for Free” button asks for the customer’s credit card details. Had Netflix sent this email, it would have already had the credit card information. The last thing that customers must keep in mind is that Netflix accounts cannot expire as long as the payment is received.
