Indian consumers will be soon able to make payments on international websites through UPI, courtesy of a new platform called PayPal World. This is an important step towards simplifying international digital payments for Indian customers. With the integration of UPI in PayPal’s platform, customers can pay foreign merchants with the same UPI apps that they use to make local transactions. PayPal has announced the launch of PayPal World, a new initiative designed to connect various global payment systems and digital wallets. As part of the first phase, the platform will offer interoperability between PayPal and Venmo, and now includes India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This will result in Indian consumers making purchases from international platforms that support PayPal finding a UPI option at checkout. For example, a person purchasing shoes from an American online retailer can now choose PayPal on checkout and then finalize the payment through their UPI account. Ritesh Shukla, Managing Director and CEO of NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), welcomed the move, calling it a major step towards expanding UPI’s reach beyond India. “This integration aligns with our vision to make cross-border payments seamless, secure, and inclusive,” he said.
PayPal also shared that the platform is being built in collaboration with global payment leaders who represent nearly two billion users. These include NPCI (UPI), Venmo, Tenpay Global (operator of Weixin Pay in China), Mercado Pago, and others.
While Indian users gain the ability to use UPI internationally, PayPal World will also make it easier for global users to transact across regions. For example, a PayPal user visiting China will be able to pay at stores using Weixin Pay by scanning a code via the PayPal app. In the same way, a Venmo customer in the U.S. can send money to a person in Germany via their phone number and PayPal wallet.
With UPI set to go global now, this initiative promises faster, easier, and more inclusive cross-border digital payments for millions of consumers.
