If you use Google Chrome on your laptop or desktop, this one’s important. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high-risk warning for Chrome users across India. The reason? A serious security vulnerability that could allow hackers to remotely take control of your system. news Also Read: Chrome Extension With Google “Featured” Badge Secretly Captured ChatGPT And Gemini Chats

According to the advisory, the flaw affects Chrome versions prior to 141.0.7390.107/.108 for Windows and Mac, and prior to 141.0.7390.107 for Linux. news Also Read: Government Warns Users To Update Chrome And Edge After High-Risk Bugs Found: What Should You Do?

The issue has been spotted in Chrome’s Safe Browsing feature – a bug called “Use after free.” In simple words, it’s a memory handling problem that hackers can misuse. CERT-In explains that if someone manages to exploit it, they can send a specially designed request that tricks your system into running harmful code. This could let attackers access your personal data, disrupt your services, or even install malicious software. The concerning part is that this can happen all without you realising it!

Since Chrome is one of the most-used browsers in India, the risk is quite serious. The problem, however, is limited to desktop versions – Windows, macOS, and Linux – so mobile users don’t need to worry for now, the vulnerability note suggested.

What You Need To Do

The good part is that Google has already rolled out a fix for this issue. So, if you’re using Chrome on your computer, just make sure you’ve updated it to the latest version. Here’s how to check:

  • First of all, open Chrome.
  • Now, go to Settings and then click About Chrome.
  • Chrome will automatically start checking for updates and install the new one.
  • Once done, simply restart your browser to apply it.

We suggest that if you often forget to update your browser, just turn on automatic updates. This way, Chrome can take care of it for you while keeping the browser up to date with the latest updates. It may not seem like a big deal, but these small updates play a big role in keeping your system safe from hidden risks. So, if you haven’t updated your Chrome yet, now’s the perfect time to do it.
