The company behind the Pokemon franchise, Game Freak, has been hit by a massive data breach. The hackers released employees’ names and email addresses of the companies besides the Pokémon files, which are the source codes of the preceding video games.
The company recently realized that the data leaked through an outside user that penetrated the database. They apologized for releasing over 2,600 personal data and emphasized how that affected their employees. However, Game Freak did not refer to the leak of any game-related material in its statement.
The company said, “Game Freak has identified that the personal information of our employees and others was leaked in connection with unauthorized access to our servers by a third party in August 2024. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern this has caused everyone involved.”
However, social media such as Reddit posts claim that the breach extends the employee’s information, but this has yet to be ascertained as accurate. According to the sources, the leaked files include source codes of some Pokémon games, unused designs, and info on some of the projects yet to be released. Any codenames of games due out may have probably been revealed, but there have been no direct leaks from other companies associated with Pokémon, like Nintendo or Creatures Inc.
It raises questions about the safety of sensitive information or personal identification details, especially for high-touch brands like Game Freak. To the best of now, Game Freak has teamed up to solve the incident.
Game Freak was struggling with problems with the Pokémon series in the past, long before the recent scandals surfaced. Though the spinoff game Pokémon Legends: Arceus was very successful because of the franchise’s massive success, it was short-lived. The Pokémon Scarlet & Violet video games documented for Generation IX were poorly received. Nevertheless, some other designs, such as Tatsugiri and Paldean Clodsire, were unique, with innovative features of real-world objects and older Pokémon versions.
