YouTube has officially rolled out Premium Lite in India, aimed at viewers who simply want an ad-free experience without paying for extra features. Priced at Rs 89 per month, this plan is a stripped-down version of YouTube Premium and costs the same as the student plan for the full subscription. What’s included in YouTube Premium Lite? Subscribers of Premium Lite will get ad-free playback on most videos across categories such as gaming, beauty, fashion, and news. The subscription works on all devices, including smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs. However, the plan does have some limitations. For example, ads may still appear on YouTube Shorts, music content, search results, and browsing pages. Unlike the full Premium subscription, you also won’t get benefits like background play, offline downloads, or access to YouTube Music. For context, YouTube Premium in India starts at Rs 149 per month for individuals, Rs 219 for a Duo plan, and Rs 299 for a Family plan (up to five members). An annual plan is priced at Rs 1,490. Students already have the option of Premium at Rs 89 per month, but Lite now brings the same price point to everyone looking only for ad-free viewing. In short, Premium Lite is for those who don’t care about extra features and just want to watch videos without interruptions. Interestingly, Premium Lite first launched in the US earlier this year at $7.99 per month (roughly Rs 709), making the Indian pricing much more affordable. Meanwhile, YouTube is also experimenting with new AI-driven tools through its YouTube Labs initiative. One of the first features under testing is AI Hosts for YouTube Music, which could change the way users discover and listen to tracks.
If all you want is ad-free YouTube at the lowest possible price, Premium Lite is a good option. But if you’re someone who often listens to YouTube Music, downloads videos for offline use, or likes playing content in the background, the full Premium subscription remains the better pick.
