WhatsApp, the most popular chat app in the world, is working on a new feature to quickly place a call without having to save a number. A new phone dialer is in the works, available to beta testers on Android only. A screenshot of the upcoming feature suggests the dialer will be a part of the app’s efforts to make communication with new contacts easier and an extension of the functionality that allows users to open chats for unknown phone numbers quickly.
WABetaInfo has reported the in-app dialer is available on the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.9.28. The screenshot shows a typical Android dialer, which you can use to call a number not saved on your phone. It will be useful when you need to call someone for a temporary reason, such as for a business meeting, a quick query, or an online purchase. The existing calling function works for saved contacts only. If you want to call a new number on WhatsApp, you first need to save the contact in your phonebook.
The new in-app dialer has the same functionality as the quick chat option, which allows users to chat with an unsaved number. It will also minimise the use of the phone’s default dialer if you want to place an internet call using WhatsApp. Several users prefer WhatsApp calling over the traditional one because they want a better connection and clear voice, which is often impossible with a cellular call. WhatsApp also has the option for low-data consumption for calls, making the in-app dialer more useful in certain scenarios.
According to the report, the in-development dialer feature will be available to all Android users of WhatsApp. However, beta testers can access it only. There is no word on when WhatsApp plans to roll it out widely for every user. You can sign up for the beta programme through the Google Play Store if you want to use the feature. On the other hand, iOS users are unlikely to get this feature due to the restrictions Apple imposes on third-party dialer apps.
