WhatsApp is now suggesting contacts to chat with

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a new feature in the beta version of the app on Android. The new suggested contacts feature suggests other WhatsApp users with whom you can chat. So, let’s say you added your friend’s friend to your phone’s contact list, and they are also available on WhatsApp. WhatsApp will now suggest you chat with this new friend. This will also likely work for the contacts you added a while ago but haven’t started a conversation with. With this feature, the company is probably looking to increase user engagement on the platform. This will in turn ensure that people are on the platform for long hours engaged in chatting.

Interestingly, these suggested contacts won’t be randomly placed anywhere on the screen. Rather, they will be listed under the ‘Start chatting’ section at the bottom of the Chats tab. This is great as it won’t make your timeline cluttered with random chats. So you can continue messaging those you do and also look for new ones in the section below.

As said above, this feature is currently being tested in the beta stage. It is available on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.9.5. If you are already a beta user, you can use it now. Update the app via Play Store and see if you see a start chatting section in the app.

It’s unclear when WhatsApp plans to make this feature public. However, since it’s in the beta stage, expect it to arrive in the stable version of the app in the coming weeks or months.

In other news about WhatsApp, the company is also enhancing the status experience for users. The upcoming feature will alert users when they have an unseen Status update from their friends. WhatsApp wants users to notice its Status tab more with this feature.
