Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a new Voice Over Wi-Fi service in India, improving connectivity. The new feature will allow users to make voice calls without a cellular network with the help of a Wi-Fi connection. With VoWiFi, BSNL is directly competing with telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea. All these companies have offered Wi-Fi calling to their customers for several years.
BSNL has installed more than 1 lakh mobile towers, with nearly 97,500 more planned to enhance the network coverage in India. This comes under the company’s 4G network expansion across the country. The new BSNL service was unveiled by Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications, as part of BSNL’s 25th-anniversary celebrations.
Currently, VoWiFi will be available in selected South and West zone circles, with plans to expand nationwide in the coming months. Other than this, BSNL has also launched 4G and eSIM service in Mumbai.
BSNL’s VoWiFi network coverage service will work with the help of any Wi-Fi or home broadband connection, even in areas that have weak or no mobile signal. It will deliver crystal-clear voice calls and will be useful for users in indoor as well as low-network zones.
To use the service, customers need a smartphone that supports VoWiFi, a feature available on most modern Android and iPhone models. Users can enable the option directly from their device settings.
One of the biggest advantages of BSNL’s VoWiFi service is that it is completely free of charge. Subscribers will not incur any additional fees when making calls over Wi-Fi. BSNL confirmed on its official social media channels that the service aims to enhance user experience and provide uninterrupted connectivity without extra cost.
