PS5 update: Sony has announced a bunch of new features for its PlayStation 5 gaming console. This update makes it easier for PS5 users to find new friends on social media and jump on a gaming session. While PS5 users could already invite friends to join their gaming session, now the company has made it as easy as scanning a QR code, which is quite similar to the feature offered by various messaging and social media platforms including WhatsApp.
The company, via an update on its official blog post announced that it is introducing the ability for users to generate a shareable link (a QR code) on their PS5 consoles or on the PlayStation app and send it to other PS5 players through any messaging or social media platform. “By opening the link, the recipient will be able to hop into your multiplayer session even if they aren’t already friends with you on PlayStation Network,” the company wrote in its post.
For understanding, you just met an old friend on a social media platform such as Snapchat or Instagram. With this update, you can send them a PS5 session invite in the same chat and start playing together right away, without needing to add each other as friends on PS5 first.
But there’s a catch!
This feature isn’t available to use right away. Instead, Sony is expected to roll it out to PS5 users in the coming months. Additionally, the company has also shared some ground rules for this feature to work. Here’s what the company is saying:
— All players joining a PS5 multi-player session must have the game installed.
— All players will require a PlayStation Plus subscription for this feature to work.
— This feature does not support PS4 games and other backward-compatible titles.
— Users may have to update a bunch of games for this feature to work seamlessly.
Here’s how the interface of this new feature will look like:
Lastly, the company has announced another feature that will let users share their or another player’s PlayStation Network profile on any messaging or social app by generating a link from PlayStation App, the PS5 console, or your web profile on PlayStation.com. This feature is also expected to be available in coming months.
