With the emergence of AI, deepfakes have peaked, and there was no way to handle these until now. Google has a handy tool that curtails the menace of the rising deepfake results on Google Search. Thanks to this tool, users can remove their nonconsensual deepfake images or any such content that falsely depicts them in a sexually explicit situation. Let’s see how you can use this tool if a situation arises, and officially tackle or take down your deepfake media.
Google’s Deepfake tool is nothing but a removal request that users can generate. That’s probably because it’s easier that way as you just have to put in some data in the field, and some supporting material, and you are good to go. Here are the steps to fill in the Google removal request form.
Step 1: First up, head to the following Google support page.
Step 2: You can take your time and read the details, or simply follow this guide. Just tap on the “Start removal request.”
Step 3: Google will ask you a series of questions, such as why are you requesting personal content removal. It will also ask you to describe the type of content and add supporting material if any. Note that for India, there’s a region-specific form that you can access here. It has similar information and questions to fill up.
Step 4: Once you answer all the questions and reach the last stage, simply submit the form and wait for Google’s verification.
If Google verifies your request then you are good to go as the content should be handled by Google and possibly removed. Also, content with the same name or the same person will be filtered further. Any duplicates of the image will also be removed.
“When someone successfully requests the removal of explicit non-consensual fake content featuring them from Search, Google’s systems will also aim to filter all explicit results on similar searches about them. In addition, when someone successfully removes an image from Search under our policies, our systems will scan for – and remove – any duplicates of that image that we find,” noted Google in its blog post.
This is a great tool by Google and a much-needed one. We expect more advancements in filtering out deepfakes or nonconsensual explicit images in the near future.
