Meta Ray Ban Glasses

Smart glasses could actually be the next big thing going forward, as all major tech giants are working on XR glasses. Meta has been one of the first to already launch two pairs, and many other companies like XREAL, VITURE, and more have already launched multiple XR glasses. But now, it looks like TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has also started working on their own XR glasses. According to sources who spoke with The Information, this could be a lightweight pair of XR goggles that could rival the next-gen Meta Ray-Ban glasses.

ByteDance XR Goggles

According to insider reports, the prototype resembles a slim pair of ski goggles that connect via cable to a palm-sized puck. That puck will likely be worn in a pocket or clipped to a belt and would house the main processor and battery. This design would be similar to the Apple Vision Pro, where the battery is housed separately. To keep motion latency to a minimum, ByteDance is reportedly designing proprietary chips as well.

Earlier Pico, which is ByteDance’s XR hardware arm, had reportedly been building a full-blown spatial computing headset to compete with the Apple Vision Pro. Those plans were later shelved. But now, it looks like the new goal for the company is to build a device closer in size to Bigscreen’s Beyond headset, which weighs barely 107g yet still delivers immersive visuals.

Now, Pico is said to be in talks with Chinese component suppliers, though the final specifications for the goggles are still unknown. Even the launch date hasn’t been confirmed yet. However, this launch could be an important one, as ByteDance might want to capture the everyday XR market before giants like Meta and Apple fully establish their dominance in this category.

Along with this, ByteDance’s decision to build their own custom silicon means the company can fine-tune power consumption and latency. Their expertise in the short-form video ecosystem could give ByteDance a ready-made pipeline for immersive experiences and potentially give it an edge over Meta. For now, everything is still on the drawing board. But if ByteDance succeeds, the next wave of XR hardware might just get a wildcard entry no one saw coming.
