The iPhone 17 series officially went on sale just a day ago, with long queues spotted outside Apple Stores across cities from Hong Kong to New York. But while the excitement was high, early buyers and visitors noticed something that Apple won’t be too happy about – scratches on the new models already showing up on display units. As per a report by Bloomberg, the deep blue variants of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max were spotted with visible scuffs just hours after being put on display at Apple Stores in New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and London. Even the black iPhone Air, which debuted as Apple’s thinnest iPhone, didn’t escape criticism, with noticeable scratch marks appearing on some units. Not only that, Apple’s own MagSafe charger seems to be leaving circular impressions on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro models. The issue didn’t stay limited to stores. In China, one of Apple’s first launch markets, social media was flooded with user complaints and photos of scratched iPhone 17 devices. On Weibo, the related hashtag crossed 40 million views within hours, while users on X also shared pictures and videos showing the blemishes. However, this isn’t the first time iPhones have had finish-related concerns. The iPhone 5’s black and slate model faced similar scuff complaints back in 2012, while the iPhone 7’s glossy black variant was known to pick up scratches easily. Apple’s latest iPhone 17 Pro lineup returns to an aluminium frame, which, while lighter, is known to be prone to visible marks, especially on darker shades like the new deep blue.
Despite the chatter around scratches, the iPhone 17 series is seeing strong demand. In Hong Kong, walk-in availability was limited to the new iPhone Air, while Pro and Pro Max buyers were redirected online with delivery wait times of three to four weeks. The story is similar across Asia, where demand for the higher-end Pro models seems to be high.
For now, scratches might just be an early annoyance for buyers of the blue Pro and black Air variants, but Apple hasn’t yet issued a statement.
